What are depalletizers? #
Depalletizers are machines designed to transfer empty containers from pallets and feed them into the production cycle in an orderly and continuous way. They are used for handling bottles, jars, cans, bottles and other containers intended for packaging lines.
These systems are generally installed at the beginning of the production line and feed machines such as rinsers, fillers or other processing systems.
Automating this stage is essential to keep high-speed lines running without interruption, reducing the physical strain caused by repeatedly handling heavy or unstable loads manually.
Types of depalletizers #
The choice of depalletizer mainly depends on the speed of the line, the stability of the product and the characteristics of the pallet to be handled.
Sweep-off depalletizers #
These systems transfer an entire layer of containers from the pallet to the machine’s accumulation table using a sweep-off system. A multi-chain conveyor operating at different speeds then aligns the containers in an orderly flow.
The process includes:
- layer detection;
- securing the layer around its perimeter using dedicated devices;
- push transfer onto the buffer table;
- elevator repositioning;
- push transfer onto the conveyor table;
- container discharge and alignment.
Why choose them #
Sweep-off depalletizers guarantee high performance and are ideal for stable containers, such as bottles or jars with little taper and regular shapes.
They can be integrated with a wide range of optional devices, such as automatic layer-pad removal systems, strap removal systems, pallet magazines and pallet conveyors, allowing fully automatic systems to be created.
Main advantages:
- high performance;
- production continuity;
- ease of use;
- possibility of fully automatic configuration.

Combined sweep-off and tube-gripping depalletizers #
These systems combine two depalletizing methods in a single machine: sweep-off transfer of the layer and lifting with a tube gripping head.
In addition to the conventional sweep-off system, they incorporate a tube gripping head positioned above the sweep-off mechanism, allowing the layer to be lifted rather than slid when necessary. The system can therefore also operate in pick & place mode.
This solution offers maximum operational flexibility, allowing the most suitable depalletizing mode to be selected according to the shape, stability and fragility of the container.
Why choose them #
Combined depalletizers are recommended when the line has to handle different types of containers or products that cannot be pushed without the risk of falling, breaking or being damaged.
They are particularly suitable for irregularly shaped containers. They can also pick containers from cardboard trays, which often protect and maintain the stability of the layer.
They can be integrated with automatic systems for removing layer pads and trays, strap removal systems, pallet magazines and pallet conveyors.
Main advantages:
- high performance;
- production continuity;
- versatility in handling different container materials;
- gentle container handling;
- precise discharge;
- ability to pick containers from cardboard trays;
- fully automatic configuration.

Robotic or Cartesian gripping-head depalletizers #
Gripping-head depalletizers use dedicated systems, such as vacuum plates, magnetic plates or inflatable tubes, to lift a layer or individual groups of containers and transfer them from the pallet to the machine’s accumulation table using pick & place movements.
Subsequently, a multi-chain conveyor operating at different speeds aligns the containers in an orderly way.
The process includes:
- positioning above the layer using a robot or Cartesian system;
- picking the layer or batch;
- repositioning;
- depositing onto the conveyor table;
- container discharge and alignment.
Why choose them #
These systems are ideal for applications requiring high flexibility, handling precision and gentle container handling.
They are particularly suitable for glass bottles, unstable containers or irregularly shaped products that cannot be pushed without the risk of falling or being damaged.
The pick & place system can also pick up and place layer pads or trays, making the machine particularly versatile.
Main advantages:
- versatility in handling different container materials;
- precise discharge;
- gentle container handling;
- reduced risk of breakage or dents;
- ability to pick containers from cardboard trays;
- handling of layer pads and trays;
- wide range of optional devices for automatic configurations.

Advantages of using a depalletizer #
Installing an automatic depalletizing system significantly improves the efficiency at the start of the production line.
Reduction of operating costs
Automation reduces the need for labor dedicated to repetitive, tiring and strenuous tasks.
Increased productivity
Constant work cycles allow the line to be fed continuously, even over multiple production shifts.
Greater safety and ergonomics
Manual load handling is reduced or eliminated, improving operator safety and process ergonomics.
Production continuity
An automatic system ensures greater regularity in line feeding and reduces dependence on operator availability.
How to choose the right depalletizer #
The choice of the most suitable depalletizer depends on various technical and production factors.
1. Production requirements
It is important to evaluate:
- production volumes;
- line speed;
- number of shifts;
- available space;
- required level of automation.
2. Product and pallet characteristics
The type of container and the pallet configuration directly influence the choice of machine.
The main elements to consider are:
- container weight;
- container shape;
- container dimensions;
- product fragility;
- layer stability;
- presence of trays, layer pads, pallet hoods or frames;
- pallet dimensions.
These factors determine whether a sweep-off system, a combined system or a robotic or Cartesian pick & place solution is more suitable.
3. Future flexibility
It is also useful to evaluate possible future needs, such as:
- new formats;
- product changes;
- line expansions;
- variations in pallet configuration.
A flexible machine makes it easier to adapt to the evolution of production.
4. Integration and expertise
Before choosing, it is important to consider:
- compatibility with the existing line;
- ease of use for operators;
- ease of maintenance;
- availability of internal technical skills.
5. Budget and return on investment
The initial cost is not the only factor to evaluate. It is also important to consider:
- operating savings;
- increased efficiency;
- reduction of errors;
- fewer line stoppages;
- greater operator safety.
In summary
There is no “best” depalletizer in absolute terms, only the solution that best suits your line.
The right choice allows you to:
- increase productivity;
- reduce operating costs;
- improve process reliability;
- increase safety;
- ensure greater production continuity.
